This class will merge the knowledge of the fundamentals of classical landscape painting as a foundation, combined with the understanding of the basic principles and elements of abstraction in order to loosen up.

Pushing one’s landscape paintings with a variety of mediums and tools as a way to control and explore beyond the basics, as well as heavy analysis on modifying design and composition to push outside the obvious. Beginning with emphasis on mark-making, color theory, color notes, and sketches, and ending with demonstrations and discussions on the pursuit and struggles of a larger scale painting.

Experimenting with Cold Wax Medium as an addition to oil paint will be covered in order to add texture, layering and mark making.

"The understanding of fundamental artistic skills can allow one to capture the essence of the

landscape by simplification of color, shape, and pattern; in turn, redefining the idea and presentation

of reality.” - Chris Groves
