Values and Edges are two of the most important fundamentals in improving your work.   Spend three days working on the areas that will make you grow the most as an artist. Just to start, you will learn to judge and depict accurate values using a direct painting approach. A small sketchbook to work out designs and compositions and a drawing pencil or pen.

PALETTE COLORS: As long as you have a Blue, Red, Yellow, White and any other colors you normally paint with, you are fine. Also, one of the Transparent Oxide colors would be helpful (Red or Brown, etc.) I do recommend  using Pro Grade paint, it is more heavily pigmented.

​

MY CURRENT PALETTE: Cadmium Yellow Light (G), Indian Yellow (G), Cadmium Red Light (G), Alizarin Permanent,

Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White (R), Viridian (R), Transparent Red Oxide

Occasionally: Cassel Earth (L), Kings Blue (R)

CANVAS:

You will need a non-absorbent canvas for the class; an oil-primed linen is best (do not put gesso on an oil-primed canvas). However, I have also had good luck with the New York Central listed below, using two coats of Golden Gesso.

I would suggest no smaller than 6 x 8 and no larger than 12 x 16. Please have at least 3; however, depending on how prolific you are, you may want to bring extra. I have had students complete as many as 8 paintings with this method in this class. Please have them prepped before class if you use the New York Central or any other acrylic-primed canvas.

BRUSHES: (Below are suggestions to choose from, but I will say, quality brushes are one of your most important tools.) Please bring at least one #8 or larger flat or long flat. I paint on a 9 x 12 with up to a #16. Below are some suggestions.

EASELS: I use my Plein Air Easel for convenience inside and outside when I am painting

anywhere other than my studio. Below are some good choices, but there are several on the

market. Don’t rush out and buy one just for this workshop. I simply wanted you to have the info.

PALETTE KNIFE: I use an elongated diamond shape; medium in size.

​

PALETTE: I prefer that you use a glass, middle-value grey palette; it is useful for seeing the values of both light and dark mixtures.

​

TURPENOID: Odorless or GAMSOL (Nothing else will be allowed in the classroom.)

​

TURPENOID CONTAINER: Airtight Cap Brush Washer (any size). Holbein Portable Brush Washer is well worth the extra money; the cheaper ones tend to leak. (I am NOT a fan of the Silicoil Brush Cleaner Tank but I am fine if you use it in class.)

​

OTHER SUGGESTIONS: Blue shop paper towels, pencils and pens for sketching, eraser, trash bags, sketchbook and/or notepad to take notes, Q-tips (the off brands work best because they are not so soft and fuzzy), camera or phone, apron, a pair of pliers, razor scraper to remove paint from palette box glass and gloves.
